They were created by Josef Karl Wilhelm Ludwig Demnitz, an Austrian musician and composer who lived from 1805 to 1881. The first book was published some time between 1835 and 1840 as "Sei Studien fur die Clarinette. Op. 18.", and they soon became very popular, especially in Germany. It is the second most published work for clarinet, after W. A. Mozart's Clarinet Quintet in A Major, K. 581 (1789/1791). The lessons have been arranged in a logical progression from simple to moderately difficult. They range from basic techniques such as tonguing and articulation to scales and arpeggios, intervals and triads, double-tonguing and simple melody playing. The student should start with the first study, marked "Nachschlag", or basic exercise 1st tempo, then take up each successive study in sequence from #2 to #12. At first, each study should be practiced by itself, then in small groups of 2 or 3 without the metronome. Next, the studies should be practiced in order with the metronome at a slow tempo. Once a student has mastered this exercise, he/she should try playing the entire collection from memory. The lessons are short and serve as a fine introduction to many basic techniques which can be applied to any instrument. They require very little in terms of accessories and also provide a good foundation for beginning improvisation in a style similar to that of Leopold Mozart (1719–1787). The studies were meant to be played in the order given, with each one building upon the next. By keeping this in mind, all of the musicians who use these study scores will find that they are much more effective in their work. These clarinet studies are written in C major and are very useful for beginners.
